When we explore the topic of “real choice,” we are talking about choosing between two states of mind. Inevitably though we will start speaking about guidance because guidance helps us consistently remind us of purpose, the only real choice.

Following guidance becomes very natural as we accept everything that is given. The real choice is not between “this or that” in form, but rather a choice in purpose. Through this acceptance, we experience that we are being carried along by God and that everything we truly need for our awakening is provided.

In order for us to have this experience—of being in the flow with the Holy Spirit’s guidance—we need to clear our beliefs. While this clearing happens through practical, day-to-day guidance, it isn't something we “do”—it comes from the prayer and desire of our hearts.

St. Augustine’s famous saying is a beautiful reminder of this: “Love and do what you will.” The focus is on our state of mind or state of being (“love”), and the effect (“do”) comes after. Our actions follow from our thoughts and beliefs, and we can shift the focus of our choice—the real choice—to our state of mind instead of being on the body and behavior.
